In Love: Derby

I had my first derby bout a few weeks ago. I was nervous the entire day, and was certain I was going to throw up or pass out. Luckily, I had awesome fans to support me. Thank you.

I have been skating since September, and I have fallen in love with the sport. Not only does it work and challenge me physically, but derby requires a lot of mental toughness. It's easy to get intimidated, I mean… these chicks look badass. Fortunately, I have been welcomed into a community of kickass women who are motivating and inspirational. I am constantly being reminded that while I have teammates whom I look up to, there are others who look up to me. For example, while at the game, a little girl came over and asked me for my autograph. SERIOUSLY?! How adorable! I signed the program:

What a feeling!

Putting on ripped nylons, tiny booty shorts, pads and a helmet is awesome. Where else can you do that? I feel sexy and fierce. Our next game: April 29th. Bring it on.

ICKY SICK

No work today. My throat hurts, I have an annoying cough, and my head feels like it's going to explode.

Regardless of how old I get, I still want my mom when I am sick. She's a 6 hour drive away, so luckily I have Noah. It's not the same, but he force feeds me vitamins and makes me cup after cup of tea. Everyone wants to be cared for when they're sick.

It reminds me of the scene from Sex and The City. Right now, all I am wanting is cough syrup blended with orange soda and ice.

Classes start tomorrow… let's hope I feel well enough to sit though 6 hours of class. Ugh…...

In My Head

Also on my mind.... my bangs have grown out a bit. I could either commit to growing them out, or run and get them trimmed. What to do, what to do?

Welcome, Spring

Today marks the first day of Spring, yet I woke up to large gusts of wind and drizzle.

I am ready for blue skies and the warmth of the sun. I just love to drive with my roof open and the windows down. I love it so much I'll do it in the winter and just blast the heat. The welcoming of Spring means it's almost Summer! And Summer means dresses, trips to the market, and outdoor dining and music! Can you tell I am excited to rid of rain for a few months?

Around noon today the clouds parted and it actually looks like Spring! The cherry blossoms outside my work window are blooming, and the tulips are peeking through!  I'm pulling out the floral prints and pastels...I'm forcing this shit to happen.

Wise Words On Love

Sometimes, I have so much love inside of me that all I can do is cry. How does that make any sense at all?

Falling in love is an intense and oddly confusing feeling. There's a mix of being immersed in a stupor of romance and possibility, but also the vulnerability of falling too hard and getting hurt. You want the whole world to know how you feel, but even you can't articulate the emotion running through you. All you know is it feels good, and you don't want it to stop.

One of my favorite bloggers (Joanna Goddard) posted this, and I had to share.

Back in 1958, John Steinbeck, author of East of Eden, The Grapes of Wrath, and Of Mice and Men, got a letter from his teenage son Thom, in which Thom confessed that he had fallen desperately in love with a girl named Susan at his boarding school.

Steinbeck wrote this wise and wonderful letter back to him the same day...

New York
November 10, 1958
Dear Thom:

We had your letter this morning. I will answer it from my point of view and of course Elaine will from hers.

First -- if you are in love -- that's a good thing -- that's about the best thing that can happen to anyone. Don't let anyone make it small or light to you.

Second -- There are several kinds of love. One is a selfish, mean, grasping, egotistical thing which uses love for self-importance. This is the ugly and crippling kind. The other is an outpouring of everything good in you -- of kindness and consideration and respect -- not only the social respect of manners but the greater respect which is recognition of another person as unique and valuable. The first kind can make you sick and small and weak but the second can release in you strength, and courage and goodness and even wisdom you didn't know you had.

You say this is not puppy love. If you feel so deeply -- of course it isn't puppy love.

But I don't think you were asking me what you feel. You know better than anyone. What you wanted me to help you with is what to do about it -- and that I can tell you.

Glory in it for one thing and be very glad and grateful for it.

The object of love is the best and most beautiful. Try to live up to it.

If you love someone -- there is no possible harm in saying so -- only you must remember that some people are very shy and sometimes the saying must take that shyness into consideration.

Girls have a way of knowing or feeling what you feel, but they usually like to hear it also.

It sometimes happens that what you feel is not returned for one reason or another -- but that does not make your feeling less valuable and good.

Lastly, I know your feeling because I have it and I'm glad you have it.

We will be glad to meet Susan. She will be very welcome. But Elaine will make all such arrangements because that is her province and she will be very glad to. She knows about love too and maybe she can give you more help than I can.

And don't worry about losing. If it is right, it happens -- The main thing is not to hurry. Nothing good gets away.

Love,
Fa

Super Suck Sunday

SUPER

  • Another quarter down. This one was brutal, and I'm proud of myself for surviving it.
  • To celebrate the end of this horrid quarter, drinking, venting and discussing boobs with fabulous women is the best therapy.
  • Spring Forward. It's now going to be lighter out longer!! And that's just super!
  • A week from today, I will be playing in my first game!!!

SUCKS

  • I've been a complete grad student zombie the past week. This means: I ate rice krispies for dinner, I frequently forgot to wash my hair, I rarely hung out with Noah, and I wore the same sweats for a straight week. Now that I think about it, being a grad student is a lot like a bad break up.
  • Not knowing what shoes to wear. The day I decided to wear flats and leave the boots at home, it SNOWS! I had frozen feet the entire day. Damn weather.
  • The feeling of running, or being late. I am usually a very punctual person, but lately sleep has been scarce and it's hard for me to get up in the morning. I literally have a semi-conscious conversation with myself as I am still in bed. Chris, you need to get up. Just a few more minutes. No, really… get up. You are going to be late. It's okay, I'll just be late.
  • I have the most annoying cat in the world. There's a show, My Cat From Hell… yeah, he should be on it. He just whines and cries… all the time! I need to get him on the show.

This is exactly what Remedy does. Little bastard….

Recently Pinned

Okay, so who's not addicted to Pintrest nowadays? I am spending an absurd amount of time on there, and I always have a way of justifying it.

I want a new recipe.

I don’t know what to wear tomorrow.

And then it gets a little out of hand….

I wonder what style I’ll want my hair… for my wedding day….

WHAT?

Here are a few of my recent pins…

Paleo Pumpkin-Walnut Muffins

I wanted the shoes.... so I bought them

Sometimes a girl just needs to hear this.

Something came over me.... think it was diamonds.

My amazing friend, Allan drew this up for me. Pretty awesome, right? I want it on t-shirts, sweatshirts and posters!

Bits of My Weekend

After successfully completing my derby eval… Theo and I napped.

Theo waiting patiently for Noah. He loves Noah more than me…  :-(

I stared at my closet…wishing it would organize itself. Then it didn't, so I made cookies.

Did a little derby shopping. New tights, socks, toe guards, mouth guard, and shorts.

Derby Wings

Tomorrow I have my derby evaluation. This means that I will be evaluated on basic skills in order to be officially placed on a team. If I pass the evaluation, I get to skate my first event.

Holy Cow!
Not only do I get to play, but I get my official derby name! This is a BIG deal!! It’s like an angel getting her wings!!!

Send positive thoughts my way! Derby
